Your Guide to accessing the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a life-changing program designed to provide Australians with disabilities the support they need to live independently, achieve their goals, and participate in the community. Navigating the process of accessing the NDIS can seem complex, but with the right guidance, it becomes an empowering journey.

This guide outlines the six key steps to accessing the NDIS, breaking each step into clear and actionable information.

Whether you’re starting your application, gathering evidence, or developing your NDIS plan, we’re here to help you every step of the way.
Let’s explore how you can take the first steps toward accessing the support and services you deserve.

Steps to Access the NDIS

  1. Check Your Eligibility
To access the NDIS, you must meet specific eligibility criteria:

    • Age: You must be under 65 years old when applying.

    • Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.

    • Disability: You must have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your ability to perform everyday activities, or you need early intervention for a developmental delay.

Visit the NDIS Eligibility Checklist to learn more.

  2. Submit an Access Request
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can start the application process by submitting an Access Request Form (ARF). You can do this by:

    • Calling the NDIS on 1800 800 110.

    • Requesting the form via email or in person at your local NDIS office.

    • Completing the form with the help of a GP, specialist, or support coordinator.

  3. Gather Supporting Evidence
Along with your Access Request Form, you will need to provide evidence of your disability or condition. This may include:

    • Reports or assessments from medical professionals.

    • A statement from your GP or specialist outlining the impact of your disability on daily activities.

    • Any relevant therapy or treatment plans.

  4. Wait for Your Outcome
After submitting your application, the NDIS will assess your eligibility and inform you of the outcome. This process typically takes 21 days, but it may vary depending on the complexity of your application.

  5. Develop Your NDIS Plan
If your application is approved, you will work with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to create a personalized NDIS plan. This plan outlines your goals and the funding allocated to help you achieve them.

  6. Start Accessing Services
Once your plan is approved, you can begin using your NDIS funding to access the services and supports that best suit your needs.
