From Monday, 4 August to Sunday, 10 August, communities across Australia will observe National Homelessness Week 2025, a campaign coordinated by Homelessness Australia to shine a light on the lived realities of homelessness and the urgent need for action.

This year’s theme, “Homelessness Action Now,” calls for immediate, practical steps—urging governments, services, and everyday people to move beyond awareness and work towards meaningful change. It’s a reminder that while understanding is vital, real progress requires commitment, investment, and collective responsibility.

Homelessness in Australia is often misunderstood. While rough sleeping is the most visible form, most people without a secure home are out of sight—couch-surfing, living in overcrowded conditions, or cycling through short-term accommodation. According to the 2021 ABS Census, over 122,000 people experience homelessness on any given night.

The impact of homelessness reaches far beyond a lack of shelter. It erodes safety, connection, and dignity. Without a place to call home, people often feel disconnected from community life and excluded from decisions that affect them.
